Compact fluorescent lamps vary enormously in shape from the regular fluorescent tubes but operate on exactly the same principle. In many occasions the compact fluorescent lamps - also known as energy saving lamps - form the perfect alternative for incandescent GLS lamps. Compact fluorescent lamps have several advantages over GLS lamps, such as: - A much better heat / light ratio whereby most of the, electrical energy is converted into light which makes them much more efficient. The power consumption is some 20 % of an equivalent GES lamp. - The average life is 8 to 10 times longer resulting in a considerable reduction of operating - and maintenance costs. Today's technologies have made it possible to innovate these lamps and the sizes compared to previous lamps are much smaller now, allowing the design of new generation light fittings. With the development of the electronic energy saving lamp, which has a built-in ballast as well as a starter and a normal screw or bajonet base, a direct replacement of GLS lamps had been designed. The dual type is even more advantageous than the normal (one-part) electronic energy saving lamp. The dual type consists of a compact fluorescent lamp with a separate ballast which can be fitted directly on mains voltage; the adapter (available in screw of bajonet base). The electronic adapter lasts 4 to 5 times longer than the lamp. This saves money and reduces small chemical waste. For this reason the dual type is recommended by Greenpeace.
