Fill Gas
The discharge between the ends of a fluorescent lamp is formed by the ionization of the mercury gas contained in the bulb. Other inert gases that are present facilitate ignition and contain the arc. Standard lamps typically use argon gas for this purpose, while energy saving lamps use a mixture of krypton and argon. Other types use a combination of neon and argon, or neon, xenon, and argon.
